BUILDING A RECREATIONAL FACILITY AT THE HEART OF EIGHT GROWING WEST COAST COMMUNITIES!

OUR COMMUNITIES NEED
AN INDOOR RECREATIONAL SPACE:
THE WEST COAST MULTIPLEX

The project will feature an arena and pool and potential subsequent phases.

This recreational facility will be centrally located on ACRD land, along Airport Road nearby the airport and the Long Beach Golf Course.

A unique partnership between the Districts of Tofino and Ucluelet, Long Beach Area C and the First Nations communities of Ahousaht, Toquaht, Yuułuiłath, Tla-o-qui-aht and Hesquiaht.

A MULTI-USE RECREATIONAL FACILITY

More children and youth are facing the lack of recreational facilities on the West Coast and so too are adults and seniors. With an average of 3 meters of rain per year, our winters are wet, cold, and tough. The rugged West Coast has limited access to small indoor facilities; no indoor arena facility or anything of that size. Our growing communities need more recreational facilities to offer diverse and sufficient programs and activities that will keep all residents here, engaged, well and healthy, all year!

ARENA

The area will have ice for part of the year and a dry floor for the remainder,
the proposed facility will improve health and wellness through a variety of recreational
and educational activities. During ice season, a portable floor can be installed
to accommodate many of the dry floor uses.

The arena will feature: a standard NHL-sized rink, ice and dry floor seasons,
change rooms suitable for families and teams, referee change room and first aid room,
and bleachers. Welcoming, warm lobby area with: skate rentals, small concession, administrative offices, and a reception area.

BENEFITS OF RECREATION

The benefits of recreation and wellness to each individual and to communities have been well researched and documented.

Real benefits achieved through individual and
community participation in leisure include:

  • Recreation and active living are essential to personal health

  • Recreation is key to balanced human development

  • Recreation reduces self destructive
    and anti-social behaviour

  • Recreation and parks are essential to quality of life

  • Recreation and related facilities build strong families and healthy communities

  • Recreation reduces health care and
    social services costs

  • Recreation and related facilities can be significant economic generators

On the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, the future
site of the Multiplex will be located on the traditional territory of
the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, at the center of eight communities:
five First Nations and three non-First Nations communities.

The West Coast Multiplex is
an ideal facility for uniting families and communities

Neighbouring the Long Beach Unit of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, ʔapsčiik t̓ašii (pronounced ups-cheek ta-shee) is the new multi-use pathway connecting Ucluelet and Tofino through the park, bringing unique transportation opportunities to the area.

The West Coast Multiplex will service over 8,700 West Coast residents as well as many of the annual 800,000 plus guests to
the West Coast!

OVER 20 YEARS
